Part two—Telling the story in a new culture

A Gospel storyteller on a digital stage

In the second of a two-part profile (Part one: "Breakfast with Tom," May 19, 2003), Tom Boomershine continues the story of his personal spiritual journey, and offers insights on a changing cultural and religious landscape.

He still speaks the language of scholarship. Tom Boomershine can spin epistemologies and worldviews with the best of bookish theologians. But examine the content of what this pioneer of religious communication says, and underneath the vocabulary, you'll find the soul of a radical—someone who, in order to advance change, gets to the roots of things.

Boomershine says there is a sea-change underway from a literate, print-based culture, to a digital culture based on image, sound, and story. The emerging digital culture has its heritage in ancient oral cultures, in which the story was a primal means of teaching, worship, and communication.
