Severe rash healed

Last summer at camp I experienced a difficulty that I healed through my understanding of Christian Science. One morning I woke up and found that my face was swollen and irritated by ivy poisoning. I was frightened by my appearance. I tried to calm my thought, but I was still very fearful. At first I thought sleeping would deal with the problem. By that evening, though, there was little improvement, and I became very restless and annoyed. I realized that I was trying to hide from the problem. I needed to stand up and face it.

The Christian Science practitioner who was treating me came and took me for a walk. She told me how she loved the aspen trees that grew in the area. She said that aspen leaves always respond and shimmer no matter how strong or weak the wind. This helped me to see that I respond to God's power and truth all the time. Then the practitioner encouraged me to think of ten good qualities that I express every day. I came up with these: joy, life, wisdom, patience, love, strength, peace, grace, purity, and beauty.

As we talked, I realized that I had been trying to heal my material face. By dwelling on these ten qualities I was learning to think more clearly about my actual, spiritual nature. There was a statement from Science and Health that really helped me, too. It is, "There is no power apart from God" (p. 228). This assured me that there isn't anything that could harm me. No plant could irritate me. The only power is God, good. This leaves no room for error. That evening I went back to camp. Not one person mentioned anything abnormal about my face. The next morning when I woke up, there wasn't a trace of a rash to be found.
