Some years ago a very painful condition affected the side of my face. A few teeth were removed, but no relief followed. I had help from a Christian Science practitioner, and prayed faithfully, but the attacks continued.

My mother, not a student of Christian Science, was coming for a visit, and my husband was quite concerned about her watching me struggle. During her visit I did have an attack, and there was much concern. My husband, in trying to relieve my mother's anxiety, called a close friend who is a medical doctor and asked his advice. He said I had trigeminal neuralgia, and needed certain medication immediately.

I spoke with the practitioner that evening, and she asked me to study the chapter entitled "Genesis" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Two citations from that chapter really stood out clearly to me, and I found them most helpful: first, "So-called mortal mind—being non-existent and consequently not within the range of immortal existence—could not by simulating deific power invert the divine creation, and afterwards recreate persons or things upon its own plane, since nothing exists beyond the range of all-inclusive infinity, in which and of which God is the sole creator" (pp. 513–514); also, "Mortals can never know the infinite, until they throw off the old man and reach the spiritual image and likeness" (p. 519). From these I gained a feeling that mortal thinking needed to be "thrown off," and that I was safe in God's care.
