After graduating from college in 1966, I joined the Marine Corps to earn my wings as an aviator. I soon found many opportunities to use what I knew of Christian Science.

At flight school, after I had barely passed the qualifying test with the minimum score, I was told, "You are not the pilot type, Son; you probably won't make it." That suggestion reappeared often in the following weeks, but I never accepted the claim that I was limited in any way.

Many times a critical exam or flight test would present what appeared as a hopeless situation. I turned to Christian Science in each instance to claim my dominion over mortal mind's self-imposed limitations of lack of coordination, balance, or intelligence. While flying, I kept handy on a flight knee board helpful, healing thoughts by Mary Baker Eddy. A favorite one was in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 143): "Mind is the grand creator, and there can be no power except that which is derived from Mind." With persistent work and constant prayer, I won my wings.
