For several years I had been susceptible to infections

For several years I had been susceptible to infections. This had resulted in minor surgery and visits to several specialists, who informed me that they could not determine the cause of these outbreaks and could only control them with medication. This eventually led me to a state of deep depression and reliance on tranquilizers.

One summer while on a camping trip, our family stayed at a camp operated by Christian Scientists. Many of the other campers were also Christian Scientists. I was drawn to their religion by the great joy and freedom from fear they expressed. I started to read the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Within a year my husband and I and our children were regularly attending the Sunday services held in our neighborhood by a group of Christian Scientists.

My mother, who lived near us, visited us often, but my relationship with her was spoiled by feelings of resentment I had harbored for many years. The things I did for her were generally prompted by a sense of duty, not by love. One day she fearfully told me of the pain she had been experiencing for quite some time from a growth on her head, which had developed serious symptoms. I suddenly felt a surge of compassion for her and asked her if she would like to have help in Christian Science. She gratefully agreed, and a Christian Science practitioner was called. By that evening the pain had left her. Three days later she called me to say the growth had completely disappeared and had left no trace.
