Paul says (Rom. 12:2), "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." Christian Science has brought me so many healings that I would not have the space here to relate them all. But I would like to point out the fact that physical healing is frequently I accompanied by—or, perhaps more exactly, accomplished by—a change in character.

For many years I suffered from attacks of quinsy sore throat. They sent me to bed, and at times I feared I was passing on. I had begun the study of Christian Science at the urging of a dear sister and, as my understanding grew, had had numerous healings with the prayerful help of practitioners. But impatience and irritation with, and even hate for, a near relative made me very critical. A patient practitioner stressed my need to love more, but I would often forget her advice. Self-pity insisted that the fault was largely due to the selfishness of "the other fellow."

It was suggested to me that I reread the chapter on Creation in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and as I began it, the word "belittle" fairly leaped off the page. I went back and read (p. 255), "Mortal man has made a covenant with his eyes to belittle Deity with human conceptions. In league with material sense, mortals take limited views of all things." And the realization came to me that that word "belittle" applied to my attitude of mind. It occurred to me that the love the practitioner had recommended I express might be the remedy for this way of thinking.
