God Is the Only Cause

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Since there were no other children in Jimmy's neighborhood, Queenie, his Boston terrier, was the only playmate Jimmy had. When Queenie became the mother of five puppies, he was very happy, for now he would have six playmates—at least until the babies were sold. He could hardly wait for the hungry, squirming, snubnosed puppies to open their eyes and begin to walk.

Finally they did open their eyes and began getting up on their wobbly little legs and moving around in the garage; that is, all but the tiniest one.

She was so alert and appealing that Jimmy chose her for his own special pet, named her Princess, and said he didn't want her to be sold. Jimmy felt sure that her eyes sparkled as he told her this and that she understood what he said to her. But Princess did not walk. Day after day went by while she dragged her hind legs, trying to keep up with the other puppies as they romped around the yard.
