Mrs. Eddy writes in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 1), "Desire is prayer." When I sincerely took up the study of Christian Science and attended the church services regularly, a desire for church membership came to me. Many wrong thoughts had first to be corrected, and the smoking and drinking habits had to be overcome. A friend, who later became my wife, recommended I visit her teacher in Christian Science. This I did.

We had a brief, amicable discussion, touching on various questions, and the teacher stressed one point in particular with regard to my smoking. She asked whether I would believe it if I were told that I was a member of an opposite political party or of a race other than my own.

This line of thought was what I needed to break the mesmerism that for thirty years had told me I enjoyed smoking. I was healed of the habit instantaneously! In like manner the habit of social drinking fell away. I became a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church, and the priceless privilege of class instruction followed.
