Activities for the Armed Services

A serviceman who traveled to Berchtesgaden, Germany, from Asmara, Eritrea, to attend a conference for Christian Science service personnel, their families, and civilians working for the United States Armed Forces, writes: "This activity is of unquestionable value to Christian Scientists in military service overseas. This is the first contact I have had with Christian Scientists since leaving the United States. It helped me greatly."

A total of two hundred and fifty-six people registered for the conference, which extended from October 19 to October 23,1959. They came from England, France, Italy, North Africa, Turkey, and Eritrea. A retired Chaplain and an Army Chaplain, both Christian Scientists, arranged for the conference and served as its moderators.

The theme of the conference was "Steadfastness in Truth." Its agenda included a lecture and an informal address by a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship, addresses by selected speakers, and Workshop meetings. Also there was a showing of the film "The Mother Church in Action" and showings of television programs "How Christian Science Heals." The tape recording of the Tuesday Evening Meeting, which followed the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church June 8,1959, was played for the benefit of members of The Mother Church, branch churches, and societies. These and other activities provided inspiration and healing for those who attended the conference.
