GREAT ONLY AS GOOD

"Be great"! This is a demand that we cannot ignore, because greatness is an essential of man's identity. We must expect to walk with nobility, because the majesty of the Father's creation is made manifest in man.

"Be great," Mary Baker Eddy urges us in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 203), "not as a grand obelisk, nor by setting up to be great,— only as good." True greatness is not always found on the pedestal of popular acclaim. The plant growing out of the seed of good has a quiet birth and a steady growth; it is an inner, spiritual development rather than some rapidly consummated outward manifestation.

Christian Science teaches that God is good. In fact, God is all the good there is. Therefore, good is just as natural for us as God is. Anything unlike good cannot be natural for us. As we recognize and demonstrate the allness of good, the stamp of spiritual greatness will crown our every earnest endeavor.
