GRATITUDE

[Original article in German]

What is gratitude? It is one of the most beautiful of the virtues, for it recognizes the grace and the blessings which have come to us through our Father-Mother God and through the teaching of Christian Science.

On page 47 of the Manual of The Mother Church our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes (Art. VIII, Sect. 24), "'Glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's' (St. Paul)." And on page 3 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes: "Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more. Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech."

Our Master, Christ Jesus, often thanked God before he performed healings, as, for instance, when he fed the five thousand and when he raised Lazarus from the dead. He was truly humble and grateful. Gratitude and humility go hand in hand, for the one is not possible without the other. These qualities are in accord with divine law and when utilized they protect from self-righteousness and arrogance and help lead to healing.
