THE SPIRITUAL BASIS OF BUSINESS

When Jesus at the age of twelve was found in the temple in the company of the doctors of the Mosaic law, he uttered a statement which touches every individual in his daily living. He said to Joseph and Mary (Luke 2:49), "Wist ye not that I must he about my Father's business?" thus indicating that his first loyalty was to God— to do His will and to forward His kingdom on earth.

In asserting his divinely authorized mission, Jesus did not refuse to accept parental authority, for it is recorded that he returned to Jerusalem with Joseph and Mary and did what they told him to do. Thus he illustrated for all men the fact that one can place God first in the affections and still remain loyal to human ties and responsibilities. In fact, primal obedience to God, Spirit, is the only sure basis for successful endeavor in all earthly activities. One can be truly successful only in the degree that he is about the Father's business.

And what is the business of the Father? God preserves the continuity of His infinite universe in its original state of perfection. His business is to govern His universe in accord with His unchanging and unerring laws. It is to provide all good to all of His ideas perpetually.
