MAN'S DIVINELY REFLECTED ABILITY

On one occasion when Christ Jesus taught in the temple, his hearers, impressed by his wisdom, asked (John 7:15), "How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?" On page 89 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy makes a statement which may serve as an answer to this question. She says: "Mind is not necessarily dependent upon educational processes. It possesses of itself all beauty and poetry, and the power of expressing them." In Christian Science, Mind is understood to be God, one infinite, all-pervading intelligence, which is always available to each one of us at all times.

Confirming the Scriptures in their spiritual significance, Christian Science further declares that God is Soul or Spirit, the creative divine Principle, Life, Truth, Love. Since God is All, as the Bible implies, there can be nothing outside of Him. He is the only Mind, the only Life, Love, and Truth. He is all-power and all-presence, the source of all true action and law, ability and capability. God embodies within Himself all reality.

Mind in order to be Mind must express itself in ideas, and these ideas must manifest the nature and quality of their divine source. Mind's complete expression is man, including the universe. Man in God's likeness, therefore, embodies the wisdom, might, harmony, joy, and ability of Mind, and this likeness is the real or only selfhood of each one of us.
