When I came into Christian Science...

When I came into Christian Science many years ago it was not for healing, but because I recognized Christian Science as a happy, demonstrable religion which could be used under all circumstances. Since I had a strong desire to understand the Bible and to give my children a practical religion, I began to study Christian Science. Ultimately I became a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church, where I served in various activities. My duties, particularly as First Reader, helped me to overcome numerous difficulties.

One problem to be overcome was loneliness while my husband and son were away during the Second World War. I had to realize that we must place our reliance on God, our Father-Mother, for our completeness. Our youngest child passed on during the early days of the war, and as I stood alone with God I felt His presence very near. The unreality of the mortal picture became clear to me, and it was proved to me in a truly wonderful way that one can experience instant freedom from grief or a feeling of loss. Unity with God is the greatest treasure one can have.

I have experienced many physical healings. While I was Reader an ugly gathering appeared on the back of my head. I was without pain during this experience, and the whole condition came away after an inspiring Wednesday evening testimony meeting. At another time I injured my arm. The healing message in these words from Science and Health (p. 264), "Spirit and its formations are the only realities of being," sustained me and enabled me to experience a complete healing.
