Many years ago I experienced an instantaneous healing of lumbago. At that time I was employed on the night shift in a railroad interlocking tower, which was on the outskirts of a city where several lines converged. In those days most of these plants were manually operated, and it required quite a bit of muscular effort to throw the levers which operated the switches and signals.

I had experienced periodic attacks of lumbago all through my youth and early adult life. Medical treatment proved ineffectual, and at times the difficulty was so severe that I was unable to move about without assistance.

One of these attacks occurred while I was on duty and alone during the early morning hours. An important limited passenger train had just been reported out of a nearby station, and it would be due at my tower in a matter of a few minutes. As I was about to line up the route for the train, I found I could not get out of my chair. It appeared there would be considerable delay to this train and perhaps to other trains which would be due a little later, since it would take some time for me to summon effective help.
