As a young man in New Zealand...

As a young man in New Zealand I became dissatisfied with the life I was leading in the city and took a job as a shepherd. Much as I enjoyed this occupation, the urge to carry on my career as an artist became so great that I returned to the city and was shortly afterwards introduced to Christian Science. Imagine my gratitude on reading in the first few lines of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (Pref., p. vii), "The wakeful shepherd beholds the first faint morning beams, are cometh the full radiance of a risen day." That day was rich with blessings, and progress followed with reformation and healing.

One healing I should especially like to give thanks for was that of smoking. For several years after I began to study Science this troublesome habit persisted, but I do believe the many sincere efforts I made to overcome it contributed to the final effortless solution.

When my wife was expecting her first child, it occurred to me that I should no longer puff smoke about the place. Without further consideration I omitted to buy the usual cigarettes for the week end, and that was the end of all desire to smoke. A week or so later my attention was drawn to Mrs. Eddy's words (ibid., p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Gratefully I recalled that I had often considered this passage in relation to my problem and that I had prayed for the qualities of faith, spiritual understanding, and unselfed love.
