"THE SUNLIGHT OF TRUTH"

It is interesting that the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, uses the sun as a symbol of God in her explanation of the truth. Her definition of "sun" in the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 595), "The symbol of Soul governing man,— of Truth, Life, and Love," brings out the spiritual meaning of the word as it is used in Psalms (Ps. 84:11) "The Lord God is a sun and shield."

The sun, being radiant and self-luminous, destroys darkness simply by shining. It can reflect only its own being, which is light; darkness cannot exist where the sun shines.

The sun's rays, as the light of their origin, reflect the ability to destroy that which is the opposite of their nature. This ability is inherent and cannot be denied. Although clouds may at times hide the sun and its rays, these clouds cannot destroy any one of the rays, even as they cannot destroy the sun itself. In the universe of Spirit, the only true universe, God is the central light governing all. Therefore He can know only His own existence and creation, and just as the sun shining upon darkness forces it to disappear, so God, simply by being omnipotent Life, annihilates evil, disease, and death—the darkness of mortal existence.
