When I first heard of Christian Science...

When I first heard of Christian Science we were living in a miningtown. A dear friend of mine who had become very ill was taken to Salt Lake City Utah. In a very short time to my joy and amazement. she was back home attending to her many duties in the care of a large boardinghouse. When I asked her what had happened she told me that she had had a Christian Science practitioner treat her and explained in answer to my eager questioning that Christian Science is a religion which teaches the law of God.

She said that in order to study this Science I would need a copy of the King James Version of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. How to obtain these books seemed like a large problem as I was then but thirteen years old. After praying to be shown a way to procure the books. I was led to borrow a Bible. Then I asked the principal of our school for the dish washing job at our cafeteria for which I received fifty cents a month. When I had saved the required amount my friend sent to the Christian Science Reading Room, in Salt Lake City for a copy of Science and Health which was promptly received.

Words are inadequate to tell the joy I felt when I first handled my own copy of this book. It was so precious to me that I put it under my pillow at night. I began to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. My first healing brought me complete freedom from inflammatory rheumatism, and from that day to this I have never had a recurrence of that condition.
