"Not understanding Christian Science,"...

"Not understanding Christian Science," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 394 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "the sick usually have little faith in it till they feel its beneficent influence. This shows that faith is not the healer in such cases."

Faith indeed was not the healer when Christian Science was first presented to me twenty years ago. I had no religious belief of any kind. Then one day fears of hereditary weakness, false environment, a sense of values completely physical and materialistic, brought me into a condition of despair which resulted in a nervous breakdown. The physician attending me at the time could give me no permanent relief. My mental anguish was so great I was contemplating suicide.

At this point a student of Christian Science who worked in the same office as I did came to visit me. She brought along a copy of Science and Health and asked me to read it. I did not want to, but she was so earnest and so positive it would help me that I changed my mind and began to read. Before I had finished the chapter on Prayer I was completely healed. I continued to read far into the night, finally falling into a peaceful sleep, the first sleep I had had in two weeks. Next morning, which was Saturday, I arose and joined my sister and her husband at breakfast, much to their amazement. The day before I could not have walked across the room without becoming completely exhausted. The following Monday I returned to work. The memory of this first healing in Christian Science remains with me as a beacon light.
