It was in the year 1915 that I...

It was in the year 1915 that I bought the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and began the earnest study of its teachings. At that time I was in my twenties and, although I was an active member of an orthodox church, my thinking was confused, and I longed for something that would give me true happiness and peace of mind. Then I found Christian Science, and the peace of mind came when I attended my very first Christian Science service at The Mother Church. Although I understood little of what was read, an indescribable peace stole over my weary and turbulent heart, and I knew that I had found what I was seeking.

Later I married one who was also a sincere student of this Science, and our three sons were brought up in it. They attended church and Sunday School from the time they were three years of age, and many were the healings experienced in our happy and harmonious home.

One such healing was of infantile paralysis at a time when the fear of this disease was raging. I was awakened one morning by cries of distress coming from the porch, where the boys slept. When I reached it and saw our oldest boy, then eleven years old, I was terrified by the picture. I sat down on his bed, and in a voice trembling with fear and scarcely audible even to myself, I repeated "the scientific statement of being," found on page 468 of Science and Health. The first time the words seemed to mean nothing to me, but when I repeated them a second time, the truth of this wonderful statement began to quiet my fear. When I began the third time, the boy stopped his cries and repeated this statement with me. From that time on there was no further sign of suffering.
