FOURTH WATCH IN THE NIGHT

The men on fourth watch in the amber night
Saw Jesus walking on the wave. What grace
Sufficient for the heart, that mortal sight
Could view the Master overcoming space.
Yet his disciples cried aghast in fear—
Their ship was tossed, their lives in direst danger;
They saw a spirit, not their Lord, appear;
It was a specter or some strange avenger.

So from the wilderness he came alone;
Renewed in courage, Jesus calmed the sea.
He rescued Peter, the impetuous one,
Supplying proof of Love's ability.
May we, Father, who sink in doubtful waves
Know that Your presence ever calms and saves.
