LETTERS TO THE PRESS

from Christian Science Committees on Publication

It was with much interest that I read Tolerance's letter in the Editors Mail column of a recent issue of your paper. I note with deep appreciation that his attitude towards religious freedom is consistent with his nom de plume. However, he does not appear to be conversant with the teaching of the Christian Science church, which calls for reliance upon God alone for the healing of human ailments.

Submission to medical diagnosis and the use of material remedies, et cetera, which are part of the usual hospital routine, by a Christian Scientist, are not in accord with the teachings of his church. It is for this reason, and not for evasion of payment of tax, that exemption from the provisions of the Hospital Insurance Act has been granted. I am sure that Tolerance recognizes the injustice of compulsory payment for something (medical diagnosis, material remedies, et cetera), which one cannot accept because of religious convictions.
