I have received much help and...

I have received much help and many blessings through the study of Christian Science. My acceptance of the truth came through a healing of the effects of a motoring accident in which my knees were injured so that walking was difficult. Having nothing better to do—and certainly there is nothing better to do under such circumstances—I took up the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read it to pass the time.

After reading the first chapter, entitled "Prayer," I found that my knees were sound and that I could walk as well as I ever did. Later on I found that chronic indigestion, from which I had suffered as long as I could remember, had also vanished. This was about twenty-five years ago. Since then I have relied entirely on Science, and it has helped me in very many ways—physically, mentally, financially, and temperamentally. It would be impossible to count all the blessings it has brought me.

Eleven years ago, on the day I was due for retirement from service in the public health department of a big city in South Africa, and while I was awaiting a presentation from the staff and being interviewed by a press reporter, I was suddenly attacked by severe pains in the back and at the base of my head. I asked the reporter to leave me, which he did. One of the clerks came to me, and I was just able to tell him, before losing consciousness, to telephone my wife, a practitioner, and ask her to help me. I came to later, helped by her work, and found two medical officers, heads of my department, standing over me, one with his hand on my heart and the other feeling my pulse. The senior doctor said, "We thought you were a 'goner'; your pulse and your heart had both stopped."
