Christian Science Committee on Publication for Ontario, Canada, Reports

This war has assuredly shaken loose the democracies from their lethargy regarding certain important issues. The human mind is on the march. It is determined to take steps to protect itself against the ravages of the past—against war, against lack, sickness, and the deprivations associated with old age, et cetera. The Atlantic Charter, the Sir William Beveridge report and its later amplification in Great Britain, the Wagner-Murray-Dingle bill in the United States, and the Federal Health Insurance proposal for Canada are but indications of this awakening and this determination. How fast or how far the human mind will march in the next few decades towards its ultimate objective none can foresee. At present, safety is being sought in the providing of human ways and means, but humanity must finally awaken to that great truth stated by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 232), "Security for the claims of harmonious and eternal being is found only in divine Science."

A bill which was passed in the Ontario legislature is of interest to Christian Scientists, inasmuch as it reaffirms the right of an individual to practice and depend upon the practice of Christian Science for the cure of human ailments. At the time of passing "An Act Respecting the Practice of Chiropody," the government included an exemption clause which reads as follows:

7. (d) "Nothing in this Act shall apply to or affect persons treating human ailments by prayer or spiritual means as an enjoyment or exercise of religious freedom." So the clause in the Drugless Practitioners' Act under which Christian Scientists in the province have had protection for over twenty years is now to be found in yet another act on the statute books of Ontario.
