Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Spiritual healing, so prominent in the life and the teaching of Jesus, is dear to the heart of every Christian, and I was very interested to read the item in your last issue under the heading, "Healing Mission to be held in Spen Valley." The remarks about the mission included the following quotation: "This Healing Ministry... has nothing to do with the modern cult named Christian Science." This reference to Christian Science as a "modern cult" is misleading to your readers, and I should be obliged if you would publish the following correction.

Whilst it is true that Mary Baker Eddy discovered Christian Science as recently as 1866, what she discovered was not new; it was the eternal "Spirit of truth" which Jesus said "will guide you into all truth" (John 16:13). Following this discovery and its demonstration in healing all manner of disease and sickness, Mrs. Eddy did not found a new cult, but re-established, in her church, the religion of Jesus of Nazareth. The early records of the church she founded contain the following interesting and significant item: "At a meeting of the Christian Scientist Association, April 12, 1879. on motion of Mrs. Eddy, it was voted,—To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 17).
