Leaves of Healing

The tree with its leaves and fruit is found a favored figure of speech throughout the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, in narrative, song, and prophecy. The Master, Christ Jesus, used it in his parables to give point to his teachings and found in the barren fig tree an opportunity to rebuke show without fruit, words without works. One of the most familiar of these similes is found in the twenty-second chapter of Revelation. There the Revelator, speaking of the tree which grew "in the midst of the street" of the new Jerusalem, says, "And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, also uses this simile of the tree. On page 406 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes, "The tree is typical of man's divine Principle, which is equal to every emergency, offering full salvation from sin, sickness, and death." On the same page, just before this statement, she has written: "The Bible contains the recipe for all healing. 'The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.' "

The nations of today are in great need of healing, in need of recognizing and understanding divine Principle. In the activities of The Mother Church and its branches as outlined in its Church Manual, our Leader has provided the leaves that will bring a knowledge of this healing Principle to the nations. The Manual itself, when understood and obeyed, is proved to be a never-outgrown, never-to-be-annulled guide to scientifically Christian conduct. It has been declared perpetually legal by the high human courts of justice, and its pronouncement of spiritual law is upheld by omnipotent Spirit.
