Today's Blessings

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (Pref., p vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." These words bring a promise for each "today" as it unfolds. The beginner, as well as those who have studied and endeavored to live according to the teachings of Christian Science, finds comfort and encouragement in those words. Are we not, however, sometimes inclined to give more heed to the part of the sentence which holds the promising assurance, than to the first part, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite," where the condition is made which we must individually carry out to obtain the blessings?

Webster's dictionary informs us that the word "lean" means "to rest or rely for support, comfort, and the like." Now, we only rest, or rely, where we have confidence that full support will be given. Therefore, to those who have full confidence in the truth they understand, support is already given, and "to-day is big with blessings." And what are the blessings which today holds? Sometimes there is an inclination to believe that blessings must assume material forms, rather than be made manifest as gifts of the Spirit, such as grace and peace.

On page 233 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes: "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them." Surely, then, to those who are confident of being upheld by the infinite, by God, who is All, who is Truth and Love, these proofs of grace and peace should be forthcoming; they should be seen as the blessings which are the inevitable outcome of God-reliance. To hold steadfastly to the all-power of God, to know that divine Principle never fails, no matter how strongly error seems to be entrenched, must strengthen the individual in his effort to destroy every false claim.
