Man Not in the Storm

Often opportunities appear to prove man's God-given dominion over physical forces. Sometimes these forces are in the wind and storm that disturb the sea, and would produce sickness. Sometimes they may be the destructive forces of armed combat. Physical force is an element in all physical discord. Basically all physical force is one. It is materially mental. Mary Baker Eddy so states: "Physical force and mortal mind are one" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 484).

We were once crossing the Atlantic when a severe storm broke upon us. Soon few passengers were in evidence on deck or at mealtime. As I started around the deck for an early morning walk, all the symptoms of seasickness suddenly appeared. Whatever was to be done had to be done quickly!

Instantly thought turned from the aggressive arguments of material sense to God's there-presence. Quicker than it can be written came the question, Just what is happening out there in the storm? Came the answer: The wind, a gaseous form of matter, is stirring up the sea, a liquid form of matter and the roughness of the sea is causing the boat, a solid form of matter, to pitch and to roll. All this movement of matter, just matter, is claiming to affect this material body, and through it to make me sick.
