Sunday School Notes and Comments

It has been my privilege to watch a primary class in a Christian Science Sunday School develop into an obedient, orderly, and consecrated little group of Christian Scientists. When they came from the kindergarten to the main Sunday school, they were an eager, somewhat noisy group of boys and girls. Very soon, however, I began to notice a marked change in these little people. They became poised, alert, and at all times interested. I wanted to know what had brought about this change, and so asked the teacher to tell me about her work with them.

She said: "Each week we all do specific work, such as striving to love, serve, be patient and obedient, and they bring an example of this to class. Watching to bring beautiful thoughts tends to put away undue interest in trivial things. The lessons have continuity. In the study of the Beatitudes, the life and works of Jesus are correlated; for example, the words 'Blessed are the meek' are connected with the story of Jesus washing the disciples' feet, and a study of the definition of 'Jesus' in the Glossary [see 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 589]. We study the Beatitudes and the Commandments. The children open the Bible at the correct place and learn where the Old and the New Testament are, and the books of the Bible in general.

"Care is taken to give each child proper attention as he recites or asks a question; the timid one is encouraged to express good, and the ones who know their lesson well can learn to help the others. That is a source of joy to them and gives them a sense of responsibility and a desire to learn more. The life and works of Mrs. Eddy are referred to in each lesson, so that they learn to love our Leader."
