Bible Notes

The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on March 23, 1941.]

"The Preacher" (Eccl. 1:2) — The word which is here translated "the Preacher" is in Hebrew "Koheleth," and that is the name given to this book in the Hebrew Bible. It is possible, though by no means certain, that Koheleth was a personal name used by the author of the book, as a nom de plume.

"What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?" (Eccl. 1:3) — The verb which is rendered "take" has the more literal sense of "to labor or toil;" and for that reason we find that Moffatt translates the verse thus: "Man labours at his toil under the sun; what does he gain?" Smith's rendering is: "What does a man gain from all his toil at which he toils beneath the sun?"
