The Power of Expression

ONE often hears a statement somewhat like this: "I know it, but I cannot express it." But it has been truly said that what one knows he can express. Since this declaration regarding the power of expression is true with reference to human knowledge, how much more truly does it apply to divine reality, to the expression of those spiritual ideas that emanate from the Mind which is God, infinite good—the source of all real intelligence and actual ability! Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 89): "Mind is not necessarily dependent upon educational processes. It possesses of itself all beauty and poetry, and the power of expressing them. Spirit, God, is heard when the senses are silent. We are all capable of more than we do."

To acknowledge God as the origin of all true thoughts, of all right or spiritual ideas, gives one confidence in his ability to express freely and helpfully those thoughts which exemplify the nature of divine Mind. One of the characteristics of Mind. Truth, is omnipresence; and since Truth itself is omnipresent, the ideas which express it are likewise everywhere present. Therefore, there is no truth in so-called absent-mindedness, and no place in reality for vacuity, blankness, or mental aberration. One need only realize this fully in order to be able to express himself with the utmost spontaneity, freedom, ease, assurance, confidence, and correctness.

Whether one's need is to express true thoughts through the medium of speech, writing, or action, the ability to do so with facility and accuracy resides in Mind alone. Christ Jesus evidently recognized this to be a fact, for he said upon one occasion, "I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak." Jesus not only acknowledged God as the source of his ability to declare the truth, but he understood the divine and life-giving quality of the ideas he received from his heavenly Father, for upon another occasion he said, "The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."
