"They helped every one his neighbour"

[Original article in German]

One spring morning a Christian Scientist was waiting at a car stop for the streetcar. Her consciousness was full of gratitude and joy. The trees along the street were beautiful in their fresh green. The birds were twittering merrily in the branches. The sun shone down from the clear blue sky. All seemed to speak of God's love.

Suddenly this woman's glance was attracted by something gleaming. Near the car stop there was a large rubbish wagon. It was freshly painted, and sunbeams were reflected in the broad steel wheels, so that the metal fittings shone like polished silver. Two men on duty with this wagon then came out of a house, carrying a heavy container suspended between them by shoulder straps. One of them laid his left hand on the top of the container for balance while his comrade rested his right hand on his companion's shoulder. Together they stepped onto the wide running board, lifted the container, and tipped its contents into the wagon. These workers expressed simple brotherly co-operation.

This little incident turned the thoughts of the Christian Scientist to the beauty of true activity, wherein man, in the image of God, reflects the omniaction of his creator, divine Mind. In human experience all honest labor is an expression of intelligence, order, beauty, and harmony. Thus, no honest work in business or in the home is degrading, and the grateful recognition of spiritual facts heals the fear of materiality, monotony. and overwork.
