"Be allied to the deific power"

[Written Especially for Young People]

In "Unity of Good" (p. 17) there is this inspiring statement by Mrs. Eddy: "Emerson says, 'Hitch your wagon to a star.' I say, Be allied to the deific power, and all that is good will aid your journey." This assurance of divine assistance in all one's right undertakings is very wonderful, and young Christian Scientists, as well as more advanced workers, have proofs of this in their own experiences.

Sometimes, however, the young student may be tempted to wonder if he really desires to use all that he knows of Christian Science, and if there are not perhaps certain instances when less than radical adherence to Principle is desirable or wise. In this subtle way, error would try to deceive one into believing that obedience to Principle is beyond one's present ability, and that others who are not so conscientious concerning the demands of God are apt to enjoy a fuller and more interesting life.

There is nothing new in this argument. It is of the same nature as the one Satan used in attempting to divert Jesus from his important mission by offering him the kingdoms of this world. And while one's temptation to agree with error's wiles may, by comparison, seem ever so insignificant, and the decision to resist such temptation not so momentous as was that of Jesus, yet one's rebuke to error should be as prompt and clear-cut as the Master's, "Get thee behind me, Satan."
