"Now is the accepted time"

Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," after quoting Paul's words, "Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation," interprets them as follows (p. 39): "Now is the time in which to experience that salvation in spirit and in life. Now is the time for so-called material pains and material pleasures to pass away, for both are unreal, because impossible in Science." And she continues, "To break this earthly spell, mortals must get the true idea and divine Principle of all that really exists and governs the universe harmoniously."

When one takes up the study of Christian Science, and thought begins to yield to the healing influence of Truth, one finds that now, this hour, this minute, one can "experience that salvation in spirit and in life." Gratefully one understands that today one must let Truth uproot superstition, correct error, and destroy false beliefs; that today the sinner can learn there is no pleasure in sin; that those who worry about many things can reject worry, and instead be filled with confidence, for truly today Christ is the Way.

It is today we must choose whether we shall serve Truth or error, Life or death, Love or hatred. It is today we must learn to be God's witnesses, to glorify His name, as Christ Jesus did, learn to be "doers of the word, and not hearers only." In any task we quickly see that we must be "doers," if we are to succeed. Nobody believes a task will be done only by hearing about how it is to be done. All agree that the work must be accomplished. How then can we believe that it is sufficient to listen to God's Word, and not do what the Word calls us to do?
