The Attainment of Peace

Few men in Bible history ascended to greater heights of thought than David, or descended to lower depths. He knew the bliss of communion with God, and suffered the pangs of despair which followed mental separation from Him. Consequently, the words of the Psalmist, "Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them," were verified in David's personal experience.

To obtain true peace we must obey God's law. Obedience requires understanding, and Christian Science gives the spiritual interpretation, the scientific, demonstrable explanation, of divine law which opens its truths clearly to the earnest student. "This is the doctrine of Christian Science: that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object." So writes Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 304). This interpretation of God's law may be subjected to every possible analysis and found scientifically and logically perfect. And what peace this understanding brings!

In Genesis, the Bible gives us the story of the creation of man. It tells us that man was created in the image and likeness of God. Christian Science interprets this narrative spiritually, enabling us to draw the conclusion that the image and likeness of God must be spiritual and good. This is the truth, and the understanding of it brings peace. The failure to realize this truth of creation has caused the world unnumbered ills. To understand the unreality of evil and the omnipotence of good leads to the attainment of true peace, the peace which "passeth all understanding."
