From infancy I had been delicate, and grew worse as I...

From infancy I had been delicate, and grew worse as I entered womanhood. I was constantly under the care of physicians, experimenting with diets and medicine. I finally went to a ranch one summer, as I had been advised that the freedom of the outdoors and change of climate would prove beneficial. While there I had one of my worst sick spells, and this proved to me that climate and exercise would not heal me any more than the doctors and medicine had.

When I returned to the city I was desperately unhappy and, while I doubted that there was a God, I prayed to Him to show me the way out of misery and thereby prove His existence. Three weeks later I read in the newspapers of a position for which I applied, as I usually felt better when I was working. The position was given me. When I had been there a week the office changed mangers, and the new one was a woman who had been healed in Christian Science of a disease pronounced incurable and supposed to be inherited. I started to inquire about Christian Science, but it was some time before she would give me any information. Then on Christmas Day she presented me with a copy of Science and Health. I remember being disappointed at such a gift. However, I would read it occasionally by flipping through the pages, disagreeing with what I read and sometimes thrusting it aside for days as too dull. Then I had another sick spell, but instead of calling for a doctor I asked my mother to get a Christian Science practitioner for me, which she did. From that time on I strove to understand and put into practice the teachings in this God-sent book. With my own study and the faithful help of the practitioner I was gradually renewed.

I have been healed of chronic constipation, colds, lack, and beliefs of inferiority, resentment, and envy. I have learned to be more forgiving, and find it simpler to love my fellow man even if he seems not to return this love, and then to look to God for my reward, which never fails to come. The demonstration for which I am most grateful in Science is that of church membership. I am grateful for the friends and practitioners who have helped me so much along the way, and I am also glad that I am able to work for myself more than ever before. The church Reading Room is a true sanctuary for study and communion with God. For all the Christian Science periodicals and the revised Hymnal I am profoundly grateful. Daily I thank God for the resurrection this truth is bringing to the whole world through Mrs. Eddy's spiritual understanding in interpreting correctly the teachings of Jesus.—(Miss) Grace Divine, Chicago, Illinois.
