Signs of the Times

[From the Evening News, Newark, New Jersey]

Stressing of the spiritual as the foundation of world economic recovery is the purpose of a campaign set afoot by the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America. The purpose is as wise as it is highly inspired. For the chastening the nations have suffered, and still are suffering, is a spiritual one, no matter how shortsightedly it is viewed as wholly material and economic. With the shifting of the material tide there has been a marked reanimation of hope and confidence. Without these things of the heart and mind, there can be little improvement of those we call tangible and substantial.

It is well that a great religious body, so admirably fitted by its organization and its influence, direct the mind toward a realization of recovery's spiritual aspects. Signs of the recovery which is of the spirit we see on every hand. Without it the other could not be. New confidence, new hope, new will to strive are the very groundwork on which, if at all, must be built the fabric of better times in goods, in money, in things which can be seen and felt and are the physical aspects of what is called prosperity.
