I shall be glad if you will allow me to reply to two letters...

Bridgwater Mercury

I shall be glad if you will allow me to reply to two letters in your last issue criticizing Christian Science.

One of your correspondents asks "where the fundamental doctrines of the New Testament Christianity are set forth" in the Christian Science textbook. Our critic has evidently not yet read "the important points, or religious tenets, of Christian Science," which are to be found on page 497 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As these clear up many of the points under discussion I must refer him to them.

The space available to me will not permit a detailed reply to other points raised by your correspondents, and they must perforce be treated in a general way. For instance, to quote only parts of sentences, to change a word here and there, to omit occasional words, to alter capitalization of words, thus changing the original meaning of the sentences, and to wrest quotations from their contexts, is hardly impartial, to say the least of it, and is calculated to make any religion appear ridiculous. Even the Bible could be made to appear erroneous if subjected to such usage! Furthermore, no book bearing the title quoted, the "World of Christian Science," has ever come to my notice, and it is certainly not literature authorized by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
