Having had a slight knowledge of Christian Science for...

Having had a slight knowledge of Christian Science for many years, I received much good from it and realized its protection at various times; but this half-awake condition did not serve to heal when error became very threatening in our home. It was an extreme need which awakened me to see that Truth cannot be demonstrated through half-hearted application.

I was living on a ranch and had been, for some time, so dilatory about the study of the Lesson-Sermon that fear gradually crept in and the claims of sickness which came to me were not met because of an inadequate understanding of Truth. I then tried medicine faithfully, but with no lasting or satisfactory results. During this period of several years I occasionally called on a Christian Science practitioner, when visiting in the city, but received little appreciable help from the treatments; I now understand why. On page 201 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has written, "We cannot fill vessels already full." My consciousness seemed so full of faith in matter that the loving efforts of the practitioner to displace that false trust with spiritual understanding seemed almost fruitless.

The testing time came when my little son was taken ill with diphtheria. In a panic we called the nearest physician, and he administered an antitoxin. After a few days the case was pronounced well on the way to recovery, but still the fever persisted and new and distressing symptoms appeared on the child's throat. This continued for ten days, and the physician admitted that he was at a loss to account for the strange developments. His attitude, which was both kind and honest, we appreciated.
