Christian Science Healing

Mrs. Eddy , the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 1 of "Rudimental Divine Science," has defined Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." It will be observed that she says Christian Science not only interprets the divine Principle and rule of harmony, but demonstrates it as well.

Before we knew anything about Christian Science we may have heard a great deal about laws of inharmony, laws of evil, laws of matter—laws which seemed to be operative. We may have been taught that matter creates and governs life, that matter is substance, that matter is intelligent and the seat of action and power—in brief, that matter is sitting in the seat of God, with life, action, and power existing in, subject to, and controlled by it. These beliefs constitute the consciousness in which all to a greater or less degree were living when Christian Science came to their attention; and it is the mental state which Paul designated as the carnal mind, and which Mrs. Eddy has called mortal mind. This mortal mind declares about man what is entirely mortal. It claims to create him and then to destroy him; it binds him with false laws of sickness, sin, poverty, and death—and then attributes all this to God.

The Bible tells us that God is Spirit, Life, Love, and that God made man in His image and likeness. Nowhere in the record of creation (Genesis 1) do we find that God made anything that was not good. On the contrary, it tells us that "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." We had read this record of creation; but because it is a record of God's spiritual creation, and because we had been taught to believe that all creation is material, and that we are living in what seems to be a material universe under the control of matter, we could not understand it. We therefore passed on to the second chapter of Genesis, to the account of the counterfeit or material creation. This appealed to human reason because it was in accord with what we had been taught to believe.
