All the health, happiness, and freedom from bondage...

All the health, happiness, and freedom from bondage which I to-day enjoy are due to the study and application of Christian Science, as found in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. When my little daughter was old enough to go to Sunday school, I did not know where to send her, as I had no faith in any religion; and when the time came to explain what God is, I did not know what to tell her. This was quite a worry to me, as I loved her and wanted to do the best I could for her. One day a lady whom I knew to be a Christian Scientist said, "God is Love." This seemed so reasonable to me that I procured a copy of the textbook and began reading. I found it to be just what I had always thought religion ought to be, one of love. Our first experience of physical healing was when our daughter was healed of scarlet fever in about two hours. We were both healed of liver and bowel trouble which had continued since birth. This difficulty was supposed to be hereditary.

I have learned by study and the application of Christian Science to overcome despondency, worry, fear, discouragement, bitterness, nervousness, inaction, and many other forms of error that go to make men and women unhappy, sick, and sinful. Instead of an inactive life, mine has been made one of useful activity, which at one time seemed an utter impossibility. I find, as I rely more on God and let His will, not mine, be done, that I am blessed with more health, love, strength, happiness, and freedom from all care.

Many beautiful healings have taken place with us; but one in particular I should like to tell of, as it may help some dear mother who is tempted to fear. Our little daughter was taken suddenly ill with great pain in the bowels one midnight. A practitioner was called, and treatment continued until six o'clock in the morning, without any relief. My husband not being interested in Science at that time, we felt it was best to call a physician, thinking he might be able at least to relieve the pain. When he came, he pronounced the case appendicitis, and said if no change came by noon the child would have to submit to a surgical operation. He could give nothing to relieve the agony; so we were forced to rely absolutely on God. The practitioner was informed, and about eight o'clock arrived at our home and went to the bedside. In twenty minutes the child fell asleep, and slept until noon. When she awoke the pain was gone, and she was soon perfectly well. When the physician came again he was so surprised he had little to say, and could not understand. I shall never forget the sense of meekness, tenderness, and gratitude that came with this proof of God's power. There were many witnesses to this healing, as my home was filled with visitors at the time. I used to be afraid to trust my child with God; but now I trust her nowhere else, as I know I can rely on God always.
