The Divine Principle is Love

Throughout the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy is constantly insisting upon the fact, as on page 140, that "the Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death." God is Love. The divine Principle of the universe is Love. The supreme cause of all real existence is Love. Hence nothing unlovely or unlovable is real, so-called evil in every form having only a seeming existence. Only that which is perfect, only that which is harmonious, possesses real entity.

Such is the teaching of Christian Science. And Mrs. Eddy, true to this teaching, was able in a multitude of cases to destroy the false beliefs of sin and disease which afflict mankind, and to instruct others how to do likewise.

It should not be forgotten for an instant that God is Love. This truth is fundamental in the practice of Christian Science. Failing to remember it and to reflect divine Love, the student is liable to fall back into an intellectualism which may be erudite in the letter, but devoid of the spirit of Christian Science. And should this occur, his ability to heal the sick will cease. What did the great Exemplar, Christ Jesus, admonish on this eternal theme? To "one of the scribes" who asked him, "Which is the first commandment of all?" he replied: "Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these." No commandments greater, no duty greater, than the loving of God supremely, and one's neighbor as one's self!
