[Written for the Sentinel]

Overcoming

Whoso proceeds in ordered way
And holds unshaken confidence
In God's directing, day by day,
Shall fear no dizzy eminence;
Nor shall the hordes of mortal sense
Cause him to falter in the fray,
Since midst the clouds of darkness dense
God is his changeless strength and stay.

Whoso uplifts his grateful face
In joyance for all good he sees,
Nor makes account twixt place and place
When grasping opportunities,
Shall find his erstwhile trembling knees
Made strong and supple in life's race;
Shall learn he best his God doth please
Who draws most deeply on His grace.

Whoso denies each past mistake
By turning steadfast to the right,
Regardless of regrets that make
Unceasing claim of direful plight,
Shall rise triumphant o'er sin's night,
When to his soul God's morn shall break,
And justified in heaven's sight
Shall memory of wrong forsake.

He who in conscious fealty
Refuses evermore to yield
E'en thought to error's servantry,
But spurns each subtle lure,—his shield
Reliance on God's Word, revealed
Through Love's own potent ministry,—
Doth stand, from all temptation healed,
"Unfallen, upright, pure, and free." Science and Health, page 171.
