[Written for the Sentinel]

Recompense

We may not pray for easiness,
But for that vigor pray
That manifests trustworthiness
And moral bravery.

We may not wish for easiness,
Whom God commands to keep,
As porters, realms of blessedness
Against assault or sleep.

We may not seek for easy tasks,
But we may claim the power
To manifest that love life asks
In its most testing hour,—

Which will be miracle enough
To recompense poor ease;
Which will be marvel rich enough
To pay out valor's fees.
