In my earlier experience in the application of Christian Science I had what was to me a very beautiful demonstration of the healing influence of Mrs. Eddy's poems, as set to music. I was engaged in the development of some mining property and was digging a ditch along a steep and rocky hillside to lead water from a creek to a point below, where the water was used as power to run a hydraulic elevator. First the dirt and loose stone were dug away, leaving the more solid rock exposed to be broken out later on, by the use of giant powder. Prior to this time, in my experience in handling this explosive a very severe headache had always resulted, a common complaint with those who use this substance, and known as "giant powder headache." I tried to overcome the fear but it seemed so real and well rooted that soon I was in a condition where I might have voiced Job's complaint, "The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me." I sat down on the ditch bank and tried to overcome the error but it got more severe. At this time I was committing to memory our Communion hymn as written by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and had been rehearsing it on my way to work. With an apparent sense of desperation I dropped the treatment and resumed the rehearsing (Poems, p. 75),

Saw ye my Saviour?
Heard ye the glad sound?
Felt ye the power of the Word?
