With regard to recent despatches from Boston, in which the future of Christian Science is discussed with considerable freedom, permit me to say that much of the speculation indulged in on this subject fails to take into account several phases of the Christian Science movement which render extremely improbable the fulfilment of any of the unfavorable prophecies that have been coined out of the passing away of Mrs. Eddy.

In the first place, all questions as to the maintenance of the "organization" must take into account that Christian Science is essentially individual in its application and operation. Organization has ever been at a minimum in the Christian Science movement, a means rather than an end. The degree of the progress of Christian Science has always been dependent on the degree of the progress of Christian Scientists individually in the apprehension and demonstration of the Principle set forth in their text-book, and in the very nature of the case it must ever so continue.

If Christian Science were established upon nothing more substantial than personal leadership or a compact "business machine," as some appear to think, there would be small prospect of its escaping the fate which history shows to have been that of virtually all movements so founded. As a matter of fact, however, Christian Science is asserted to be what its name implies, an accurate setting forth of the law of the infinite Mind, or Truth. If it were not such, it could not succeed, though backed by the most perfect "business machinery" of which human ingenuity is capable. On the other hand, if it be what it claims to be, human "organization" must be impotent greatly to help or seriously to hinder its advancing demands on the intelligent consideration and acceptance of thinking men and women.
