When I was asked to try Christian Science, after my only child passed on, I did so because Christian Science spoke of Life and not of death. All my thoughts were of death, and the separation of love and life, as it scemed to me, in this state of mortal existence. I could see the unreality of all that before had seemed real; all that had given me pleasure before made me miserable now. The only conclusion to which I could come was that God did not exist, and that death would end all. I could not sleep, and the doctor said this was caused by the shock received at the death of my child. He refused to give me drugs to produce sleep, as he feared the after-effects, but recommended a change of scene. I came East, but it proved of no avail.

In this state of mind I went to see a Christian Science practitioner and had a talk with her. She told me that all the good lives on, that nothing which is real can ever die, and so on. I started in to study in order to understand this for myself, reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the Bible, almost night and day at first. I had treatment, and during the first two weeks I slept about an hour each night. Normal sleep came gradually, and it was about eight months before I could sleep the whole night through. Mrs. Eddy tells us that "progress is born of experience. It is the ripening of mortal man, through which the mortal is dropped for the immortal. Either here or hereafter, suffering or Science must destroy all illusions regarding life and mind, and regenerate material sense and self" (Science and Health, p. 296). Then came the longing for wisdom to know God, who is Life; for to know God, good, aright will destroy all sin, sorrow, and death. I learned that happiness cannot end in sorrow, for Love is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever; space cannot separate us from Love, for God, who is All-in-all, fills all space. As I see all in Mind, and not in matter, I can realize that Love is ever present. I am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for all the good that has come into my life.—Mrs. Gertrude Wilson, Roxbury, Mass.
