Behold he cometh!
Originally published in the August 1, 1890 issue of the Christian Science Series (Vol. 2, No. 7)
"Comfort
ye, comfort ye my people"
For, veiled no more, the oracle, divine,
Majestic, is revealed. His name is Love,
Eternal Life and Truth upon his rising shine.
Lofty and strange the words
By seer of Israel spoken.
Ages have waxed and waned,
The silence and darkness unbroken,
When, hark! from the wilderness Cometh
The cry of the herald foretelling:
"Prepare ye: prepare ye the highway;
Make ready your souls for His dwelling;
For He cometh with power and glory;
His kingdom no longer is hidden.”
O Zion that bringeth good tidings,
Thy joy is no longer forbidden!
Roll back the stone; no more it keeps
The doorway, while the sentry sleeps.
Truth's sacred light no more shall wait
While Herod guards the heavenly gate.
Roll back the stone; its shadow hides
The heart of Love that there abides.
O cross, and nail, and scourge, and spear,
Your cruel triumph ceases here!
Roll back the stone. He is not here;
But, lo! His messengers appear
Beside earth's sepulchres, and say:
“He hath arisen! behold the way.”
Lift up your heads, ye gates of gold!
The prophet's vision, seen of old!
Within that shrine the angels sing,
And crown the Galilean King.
