The Gift of Grace

The one who prays for grace escapes the rebuke in the Bible, "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." Grace is greatly needed by mankind. Mary Baker Eddy writes, "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 4). And in the same chapter, in her interpretation of the Lord's Prayer, she renders the petition for daily bread (p. 17) as, "Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections."

Grace is a spiritual gift, a Godlike quality; it is shown in the God-given ability to think clearly, do rightly, and love intelligently. Grace is the evidence of righteousness, the inseparable companion of love, joy, humility, and gratitude. It is a gift of divine Mind for the healing of the nations.

Man is coexistent with God, and is, therefore, conscious of God's abundant grace; he is always mindful of his God given dominion, his at-one-ment with all-inclusive Deity. Mankind discerns grace through right desire or prayer, humility, faithfulness, and courage in pressing on toward the working out of true ideas and noble life purposes. Those Godlike qualities which are needed by each individual for meeting the specific needs of the day are his daily bread, his "grace for to-day."
