Electrical transcription No. 2: Interview with Walton Hubbard, M.D.

Originally published in 1933 pamphlet titled “Electrical transcription No. 2: Interview with Walton Hubbard, M.D.”

In their search for a reliable method of ministering to humanity's ills, many recognized doctors of medicine have investigated and adopted Christian Science. Among these is Dr. Walton Hubbard of Los Angeles, California, formerly a practicing physician and at present a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science. Dr. Hubbard will now tell of personal experiences which led him to become a Christian Scientist and will answer questions about Christian Science. This program has been approved by the Board of Directors of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Hubbard, I have often wondered how you came to give up the practice of medicine for the practice of Christian Science. What first interested you in Christian Science?

Your question is one that is very often asked me. While I was still attending medical college, and before I started to practice medicine, it became evident to me that there was a mental factor in disease which was almost if not entirely ignored by the medical profession. It is true that a little attention was given to it in the courses of study in medical colleges, but no effort was made to understand it thoroughly or to determine its actual importance. Almost immediately after engaging in the practice of medicine I began to investigate it. I decided to try to determine just how great the mental factor was in every case that came to me. At first I thought that some diseases were entirely physical, some partly mental and partly physical, and others entirely mental. As time went on, however, and I became more familiar with mental processes, I began to classify more and more diseases as mental, until at last I saw that all diseases have a mental origin.
